FAQ’s

How long will it take me to learn to play a song?

You will almost always learn to play at least one song your first or second lesson. However, keep in mind that music instruction is a long process. Professional musicians take lessons and practice for YEARS to get proficient at their instrument.

How much do I need to practice?
We recommend at least 5 days of practice every week. Students up to about age 8 can start with 10-15 minutes a day. Ages 8-10 should go up to at least 20 minutes a day. Over 10 should be moving up to 30 minutes a day. And serious advanced students should work up to an hour a day. (Think about this: Professionals practice 8 hours a day!) PARENTS should be actively involved with practice up to about age 10.
Do I have to have an instrument before I start? And do you furnish them?
(Singers, you have the advantage here!) YES! you need to have an instrument to practice on after your very first lesson! (The only exception is drums – you can start with a practice pad and drumsticks.) No, we do not furnish, rent, or sell instruments. We can recommend some good local stores for that. Imagine trying to play a soccer game when you have never gone to any of the practices! Imagine learning to read but you only see any books or even letters once a week!

Also, we recommend getting the best instrument you can afford. Please don’t ask your child to take their lessons seriously if you ask them to practice on a toy. An acoustic piano is best, but it needs to be kept in tune. Plan on having it tuned 1-2 times per year. If you get a used one, have a tuner check it out. A good digital piano is also good – no tuning required! Keyboards need to have full size keys, and a minimum of 5 octaves. Best choice for a keyboard is full size keys, full 88 key keyboard, hammered action, and a pedal option. Likewise, a cheap guitar will not hold its tune, and may be harder on young tender fingers for various reasons. This can make practicing very frustrating, and lead to students wanting to quit almost before they start. Please, give them the tools they need!

How much will I pay for lessons?

Private lessons are currently at $26 per half hour lesson, billed monthly at $104 per month. There is a $25 registration fee when you first start. There is no long-term commitment – our lessons are on a month-to-month basis. We have a convenient payment system set up from a debit or credit card. This allows our teachers to concentrate on what they do best – teach!

How many lessons do I get each year?

Monthly tuition is based on a 48 week year.  We are closed four weeks for holidays.  In the long months, you will get 5 lessons, short months such as Nov. & Dec., you will get 3 lessons.  Most months you will get 4 lessons.  The tuition is the SAME each month; i.e. we don’t charge you more when you have 5 lessons, and we don’t charge you less when you have 3 lessons in a month.  This makes everyone’s accounting easier.

What about summer lessons?

JCMA operates year round and does not close for the summer.  We are happy to offer unlimited makeups for our students.  If you are taking a month off for vacation and want to resume the next month, your payment is still due on the first of the month to reserve your lesson time.  The lessons for the month you miss can be made up before you leave, or when you return from vacation.  We have some other ideas for this – ask us!

Can I watch my child's lessons? Their cousin is visiting - can we bring him?
Yes, and Yes! Parents are always welcome to sit in on lessons. We have an open door policy for lessons. You can even bring a guest. We just ask that you let us know.
